U Mobile Inks MoU With Heriot-Watt University Malaysia to Collaborate on Fostering Talent Through Real-World Experience

  • The partnership will see U Mobile provide the best of Heriot-Watt University Malaysia students and graduates with industrial training opportunities
  • Heriot-Watt University Malaysia will work closely with U Mobile on developing impactful internship programme that provides the best hands-on experience for real world employability

Kuala Lumpur, 14 October 2024 – U Mobile, the award-winning mobile and digital services provider, and Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, a leading UK university in technology and business, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to become strategic partners to foster talent through various initiatives that include industrial training and internship programs with the aim of equipping the best talent with real-world industry experience and life skills to succeed at the workplace.

This partnership formalises an existing working relationship between the two parties and with this latest move, U Mobile hopes to be able to play an even more important role in facilitating Heriot-Watt University Malaysia students and graduates transition to a chosen career. One such initiative that U Mobile has in place is an IT apprenticeship program where graduates are exposed to how emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, data analytics, cloud computing, and cybersecurity apply in a dynamic telco environment over a period of two years.

The internship programme will see students receive first-hand experience on the different aspects of a corporation that include software development, engineering, and finance, whilst enhancing life skills such as communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and adaptability in a business environment. Under this MoU, the strategic partners will also collaborate on a Graduate Trainee Program that will enable the telco to identify the best of talent from Heriot-Watt University Malaysia for its various hiring needs.

“U Mobile’s vision is to become Malaysia’s most favourite mobile and digital services partner. In our strive to reach that vision, we need the best of talents and this latest MoU with Heriot-Watt is in line with a key corporate priority of fostering and retaining talent. We are looking forward to having the brightest and the best from Heriot-Watt be part of the U Mobile family as we believe we have much to offer. U Mobile plans to have even more collaborations with tertiary institutions as we believe we are in the best position to provide real-world experience to young Malaysians beginning their careers,” said Norfazidah Abu Bakar, Chief Corporate Services Office of U Mobile.

Janice Yew, Chief Operating Officer and Registrar at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, said, “We are excited to formalise our partnership with U Mobile and look forward to collaborating on impactful internship programmes to enhance our students' employability. Together, we aim to nurture the next generation of purpose-driven leaders and innovators, fostering a culture of collaboration that benefits both students and the industry.”

Earlier this year, U Mobile was recognised as the 2nd Runner-Up in the 2024 Graduates’ Choice Award for Preferred Employer in the Telecommunications Industry, further reaffirming its status as one of the leading employers in Malaysia’s telco and technology sector. The MoU was signed by Norfazidah Abu Bakar, U Mobile’s Chief Corporate Services Officer and Janice Yew, Chief Operating Officer and Registrar, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, and witnessed by Neil Tomkinson, U Mobile’s Chief Information Officer, and Dr. Ian Tan, Head of School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia at U Mobile Headquarters.
